The Olympic hype just isn’t what it used to be

The Olympics used to mean something to America. That simply isn’t the case anymore, and I’m trying to wrap my head around why.

When I was a kid the Olympics – particularly the Summer Olympics – were a huge event that commanded your attention. I recall as recently as 2008 diligently tracking the medal count and making sure America was still on top. And now? I couldn’t tell you more than a handful of things about the Olympics. The only real fact I know is that the Seine is filthy, possibly too filthy to swim in, and the surfing events for the Paris Olympics are in Tahiti.

Why don’t we care anymore? I’ve got some ideas.

Zoom leadership lauding success of return to office while working remotely is peak comedy

I came across comments made by the Chief People Officer at Zoom about the success of their return to office initiative. The painful irony of this is that the man himself works remotely and has been for quite some time. The good news is he wasn’t granted some individual single exception. Zoom’s RTO mandate states that anyone living within 50 miles of one of their corporate offices must go work in that office. There are likely hundreds of people at Zoom still fitting that description. Still, if you’re one of the ones receiving a benefit that not everyone gets, the smart move is to keep your head down and mouth shut. Instead:

“I think I can manage people at Zoom effectively while working fully remotely,” he said in the interview. “I go into the office from time to time, obviously, for my role, but the majority of the time, I’m home.”

It takes a level of willful delusion usually reserved for politicians to be in the C-suite of a company requiring employees to work from an office while rarely stepping foot in one yourself, and then he took it even further by lauding the results in an interview.

LinkedIn Has Become an Absolute Disaster

by Ryan Lobrano September 15, 2022
written by Ryan Lobrano

A few times a week I make the mistake of scrolling through LinkedIn, and every single time I find myself screenshotting something absurd so a friend can share in the lunacy with me. What used to be a website dedicated to developing a professional network has evolved into a performative circus populated by top shelf clowns. LinkedIn has become an absolute disaster.

It wasn’t always like this. If memory serves only a few years ago LinkedIn was a semi-serious place where you listed your resume and added your coworkers and college friends and never really looked at. Maybe you’d get endorsed for a few really obvious skills like eating apples or operating a computer. Yet somewhere along the way its original purpose was completely bastardized. LinkedIn has morphed into an unholy amalgamation of attention seekers and aspiring influencers and micro sales gurus, all locked in a superficial dance with the ultimate goal of getting reactions.

How I Landed in Sales

by Ryan Lobrano September 12, 2022
written by Ryan Lobrano

I remember getting to college orientation and being asked what I wanted to choose as my major. I was absolutely clueless. I had grown up on military bases, with my dad being in the Air Force and my mom working in various jobs at the bases on which we lived. Every adult I’d ever known was in the military or worked for the government. My perception of the work world was totally warped. Over the years the idea had been drilled into my head that once you graduated high school you just go to college to get a degree and then you get a job. At no point before the age of 17 had I been asked which degree I wanted and what job I wanted to get. I did not realize that this youthful indecision was setting me on a 15 year journey to sales.

What is this?

This is a blog of sales, labor, entertainment and life.

I've been in the military, worked in restaurants, ran an operations team, and now ended up in sales. I've learned more than I ever could have imagined at each stop along the way, and I spend a fair amount of time reflecting on the work world around me. It shapes our very existence.

On this site I'll write about my thoughts on sales, the nature of work, and aspects of my daily life woven throughout. I thank you sincerely for reading. If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to email me at [email protected]
